A Grandmother’s Kitchen, Made Safe
At 70 years old, Ferouz lives alone and manages her daily life independently. As she grows older, spending time at home has become an increasingly important part of her well-being and sense of comfort.
During a field visit and social assessment, several housing-related challenges were identified that were directly affecting Ferouz’s quality of life. One of the main issues was the poor condition of her kitchen, which limited her ability and motivation to use the space for everyday activities. Speaking about this challenge, Ferouz shared:
“My kitchen is in very poor condition. I have no motivation to use it, and it made daily tasks feel exhausting.”
Another significant concern was the absence of window safety protections in her apartment. This created a constant sense of worry, particularly when her grandchildren came to visit, as Ferouz feared for their safety and felt unable to fully relax or enjoy their time together. She explained:
“I am always worried and can’t let my grandchildren play freely because of the windows.”
Following the installation of window safety protections and the improvement of her living environment, Ferouz experienced a noticeable positive change in her daily life. Her home became a safer and more comfortable space, allowing her to feel at ease and fully present during her grandchildren’s visits. Reflecting on this change, she shared:
“Now I enjoy cooking the meals my grandchildren love, and I truly enjoy spending time with them.”
While Ferouz’s interaction with the surrounding community remains limited due to her age, this intervention made a meaningful difference beyond physical improvements. It restored her sense of safety, comfort, and joy—demonstrating how a secure and dignified home can positively impact wellbeing, family connection, and quality of life.
